Best In Show at 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards

Trentham Estate is thrilled to announce its 2023 Reserve Heathcote Shiraz has been awarded Best In Show at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards this week.

This outstanding red was awarded an extraordinary 97 points by the tasting panel at the Decanter World Wine Awards, made up of the world’s most respected wine experts – Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and regional specialists – who evaluate every glass for balance, complexity typicity and character. Over 18,000 entries were blind tasted this year.

Tasting notes for the Trentham Estate 2023 Reserve Heathcote Shiraz from the 2005 Decanter World Wine Awards judging panel:

‘Remarkably, out of the 29 reds from Australia that we’ve found for the Best in Show selections over the last decade, none have yet come from Victoria – so a big welcome to this Shiraz from Heathcote.’

‘It’s dark red in colour and very lively in aroma, with lots of red fruits in peppery, spicy style. On the palate, too, the wine is boisterous and fresh, softly balanced and very pure-fruited. Intriguingly, the spice seems to pull back once the wine is in the mouth; with the warmth of the tongue you’ll find compelling floral notes emerge. Grace, charm, poise and freshness, with a deftly folded and gratifyingly discreet tannin-acid balance: the craftsmanship of this wine conveys a strong sense of natural articulation and an unforced celebration of outstanding raw materials.’

‘Congratulations to Victoria and to Heathcote, and well done, too, to the team behind this deft and satisfying wine.’

In addition, Trentham Estate’s 2024 Reserve Adelaide Hills Chardonnay and 2021 Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon received Silver medals, achieving 92 and 91 points respectively. The 2024 Vermentino from The Family range was awarded Bronze.

The Decanter World Wine Awards is considered the world's largest and most influential wine competition celebrating quality, record performances, firsts and emerging trends. It is trusted internationally for its rigorous judging process where wines are organised for tasting by country, region, colour, grape, style, vintage and price, and judged across multiple rounds with rigorous calibration and integrity, ensuring only the most exceptional wines earn medals.

Receiving Best In Show, the Trentham Estate 2023 Reserve Heathcote Shiraz has also been included in the DWWA Top 50 Wines of 2025, which represents approximately 0.3% of all entries, showcasing global excellence from 14 countries.

Australia was ranked 4th overall for medals received by country, with France, Italy and Spain in the top three positions. Impressively, Australian wines took out four of the Best In Show Awards – as well as 11 Platinum medals and 65 Gold - with wines from four different Australian wine regions, including the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Margaret River.

Trentham Estate’s Chief Winemaker and Managing Director, Anthony Murphy, is absolutely delighted with the news and incredibly proud of this Shiraz that is made with the utmost precision and care. The Reserve range by Trentham is produced from carefully selected, world class fruit, grown in the terroir perfectly suited to the featured varietals.

Trentham Estate is no stranger to success internationally for its Reserve Heathcote Shiraz, receiving the Trophy for Shiraz at the 2008 International Wine & Spirit Competition for its 2005 vintage. Lovers of the Reserve Heathcote Shiraz will not be surprised by this news, who for two decades now have enjoyed drinking and collecting many vintages of this quietly outstanding red.

Trentham Estate is proud to be keeping to its reputation of producing wines of amazing value, as highlighted by its shortlisting for Best Value Winery of the Year at the 2025 Halliday Wine Companion Awards.

The Murphy family and the Trentham team hope you continue enjoy the Heathcote Shiraz along with them in the months and years to come!

International Gold for 2021 Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

We’re absolutely thrilled to announce this superb Reserve wine, made from high quality Coonawarra fruit, has received a Gold medal at the 2025 International Wine Challenge.

In addition, we achieved Silver for our 2023 Heathcote Shiraz and 2024 Adelaide Hills Chardonnay.

After collecting Gold at last year’s Melbourne International Wine Competition and the Perth Royal Wine Awards, we were over the moon to see our 2021 Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon awarded 95 points by the renowned 2025 IWC judging panel following two rigorous rounds of tastings.

2025 Halliday Wine Companion Ratings

The 2025 Halliday Wine Companion has been released and we're excited to share that we've received some fantastic ratings and reviews. We’ve maintained our 4-star rating and thrilled that six of our wines are highlighted in the new guide, all recognised as Top Value! This year, we were honoured to be shortlisted for Best Value Winery. While we didn't win the top award, we're still very proud to have made the shortlist!

2025 HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION REVIEWS AND SCORES:

2021 Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 – 93 points │ TOP VALUE

This is firm and authentic-feeling, its curranty fruit threaded with tannin, its bay leaf notes sweetened by coffee-cream, licorice and malt. The overall impression here is that time – in the cellar – will be well rewarded thanks to the wine's excellent structure, length, and general weight of flavour.

2022 Reserve Heathcote Shiraz – 92 points │ TOP VALUE

Redcurrant, licorice, asphalt and menthol characters take a medium- to full-bodied stance on the palate, earth and dry spice characters then filling out the peripheries. It feels polished and well-flavoured in general, though, there's a bit of ruggedness here, too, in a good way. Rusty tannin, bites of ripe fruit, licks of tarmac; it's a serious red wine.

2023 Cellar Reserve Three Fields – 91 points │ TOP VALUE

A burst of pineapple flavour followed by pear, honey, peach and something savoury, almost earthen. The mid-palate here is excellent, bodied and generous, the finish falling off slightly yet still satisfying. There's both genuine interest and drinkability here.

2023 The Family Pinot Grigio – 91 points │ TOP VALUE

This is so fresh it carries a slight spritz, but it's the dryness of the finish that really wins you over. It tastes of powdery apples and juicy pears, which works well in itself, but the turn toward flavour-infused dryness through the back half of the wine gives it both shape and balance and, in the process, makes you want to come back for more.

2023 The Family Vermentino – 90 points │ TOP VALUE

Fruity, salty and dry. This has food-friendliness running through its veins. It tastes like a fruit salad tossed in brine, though it's not actual salt of course – it's just the impression of it, and an attractive one at that. Lovely wine at the price.

2022 Estate Grown Merlot – 90 points │ TOP VALUE

This is good buying and drinking. It's medium in weight but well flavoured in general, with ripe plum and black licorice flavours tending slowly towards clove, vanilla and bay leaf. It feels both smooth and energetic, but mostly, it feels easy to drink. At the price, you can't go wrong.

Vintage Report 2024

Another vintage is done and dusted, and the 2024 vintage will be remembered for its swift onset and brisk tempo. Harvest kicked off on 29 January and was all wrapped up by 11 April with the last of the vines being picked. This vintage will go down as one of the best, experiencing consistently dry, warm conditions with no rain events. The fruit's quality was exceptional.

In contrast to previous years, this season saw a warm, dry spring accompanied by below-average rainfall. Summer witnessed no rainfall, just consistent warm days, this helped the fruit to ripen perfectly.

Highlights of the white harvest included the aromatic whites such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris and the reds were very good across the board.

We are currently blending our older reds and looking at putting our newer reds to barrel. We have also started bottling some of our 2024 whites.

Some of our southern Victorian reds such as Great Western & Heathcote are looking fantastic with great colour & flavour.

This year we created something special for our Wine Club members, a full-bodied, oaked chardonnay. It’s much bigger in style to our Estate Chardonnay. Wine Club members will need to look out for it. It will be released later this year in September.

Overall, it was a small vintage in comparison to previous years, but the quality looks to be fantastic. We can’t wait to share our 2024 wines with you.

Shortlisted - Best Value Winery of the Year

We are delighted to announce that we have been shortlisted for the 2025 Halliday Wine Companion Awards for Best Value Winery of the year!

Halliday Wine Companion is the leading authority on Australian wine and is the bestselling and definitive guide to Australian wine. This year, the Halliday Tasting Team meticulously reviewed over 7500 wines from over 1100 wineries. The Shortlist celebrates the best of the best in Australian wine right now.

The judging for the Halliday Wine Companion Awards took place in March, spanning two days of blind tastings. The winners were collectively decided by the entire Halliday Tasting Team. Along with the nomination, the team said: “This producer rarely gets the credit it deserves…. For mid-weight drinking, white or red, this darling of the Murray (river) always has some genuine contenders.”

The 2025 Halliday Wine Companion Awards ceremony will take place at Ormond Hall at The Commons Collective in Melbourne on Wednesday August 7, where the winner will be announced.

This is a wonderful accolade and a true testament to the amazing effort across our entire team! We're eagerly anticipating the announcement of the winners at the awards ceremony, with all our fingers and toes crossed in hopeful excitement!
